Newstone, Harry (1921– )

Canadian-born English conductor. He studied with Herbert Howells at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London (1945–49) and also in Rome. He formed the Haydn Orchestra, giving his debut concert on the 19 May 1949 at the Conway Hall, London. He made many guest appearances with leading orchestras in the UK and on the continent. He was music director of the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra 1965–78, and professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama 1979–87. In addition to having recorded works by Bach and Haydn, he has issued a new edition of Haydn's Salonen (London) symphonies.
