Newton Abbot

Town in Devon, England, on the estuary of the River Teign, 25 km/15 mi southwest of Exeter; population (2001) 23,600. Pipeclay and fine china clay (kaolin) are obtained in the area.

William (III) of Orange was proclaimed King of England here in 1688, at the market cross. Bradley Manor, west of the town, is a fine example of 15th-century architecture.
