Newtownstewart

Market town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, 16 km/10 mi north of Omagh; population (2001) 4,300. Situated where the River Mourne is formed by the meeting of the rivers Strule and Glenelly, it is a centre for angling. The town is named after the Stewart family who acquired the lands in the 17th century.

Barons Court, seat of the Hamilton family, Dukes of Abercorn, lies 5 km/3 mi from Newtonstewart, has prehistoric remains at Lough Catherine, medieval ruins, and a modern holiday centre.
