Neyshabur

City in Khorasan province, northeastern Iran, 65 km/40 mi southwest of Mashhad; population (2006) 208,900. Neyshabur is the centre of a fertile area. Products include leather and carpets. The city has long been a major centre for trade in turquoise.

In medieval times Neyshabur was an important cultural centre under the Seljuk Turks. The poet Omar Khayyam was born and buried here.

Then, two runaway fuel trains derailed in Neyshabur, causing a wave of explosions that destroyed five villages and killed more than 200 people.
The explosion outside Neyshabur, the historical home of Omar Khayyam 400 miles east of the capital, Tehran, was so powerful that residents thought it was an earthquake.
Neyshabur city officials -inc luding the local governor, mayor and fire chief -were among the dead, along with 182 fire and rescue workers.
