Nguyen Thi Binh (1927– )

Vietnamese patriot and politician. In 1979 she was appointed minister of education in the United Government and she was vice president of Vietnam from 1992. When the provisional government was formed in 1969, she was appointed foreign minister and in 1973, as representative of the National Liberation Front, she signed the treaty that ended the war.

Born in South Vietnam into a family of nationalists, she dedicated herself at an early age to carrying on the work of her father and grandfather. In 1951 she was imprisoned for her political activities until the French rule ended in 1954. Resuming the fight for independence, she fought against the Ngo Dinh Diem and later the USA.
