Niagara County

Administrative district of western New York State; area 1,362 sq km/526 sq mi, population (1990) 220,800. The county is bounded on the west by the Niagara River and Lake Erie, and on the north by Lake Ontario, and has its seat is Lockport.

Niagara County is drained by Tonawanda Creek, and crossed by the New York State Barge Canal. It contains much of the metropolitan area of Buffalo and the industrial cities of Niagara Falls, Tonawanda, and North Tonawanda. Hydroelectric plants powered by the falls sustain major electrometallurgical, electrochemical, and aerospace industries. Tourism, farming, and diverse manufacturing industries are also important.
