Two waterfalls on the Niagara River, on the Canada–USA border, between lakes Erie and Ontario and separated by Goat Island. The American Falls are 56 m/183 ft high, 328 m/1,076 ft wide; the more spectacular Horseshoe Falls, in Canada, are 52 m/170 ft high, 675 m/2,215 ft across.

On the west bank of the river is Niagara Falls, a city in Ontario, Canada; on the east bank is Niagara Falls, a city in New York State, USA. Their economies are based on hydroelectric generating plants, diversified industry, and tourism. The use of hydroelectric power in North America was pioneered here in 1881.

The French explorer Samuel de Champlain may have seen Niagara Falls in 1613, and Father Louis Hennepin viewed this natural wonder in 1678.

It is linked with the city of Niagara Falls, Canada, by the Rainbow Bridge (1941). Niagara Falls has chemical, engineering, aircraft, and metallurgical industries. It has an important hydroelectric power plant and it is a major tourist centre. It is the home of Niagara University.

It is situated on the west bank of the Niagara River, beside the Niagara Falls, and opposite the US city of the same name. Manufactures include chemicals, fertilizers, paper goods, and machinery. There is an important hydroelectric power plant here. Tourism and cross-border retail trade are vital to the local economy. The Ontario community's growth was spurred by the 1855 completion of the first suspension bridge across the river.
