Nias

Island of Indonesia, situated 125 km/78 mi off the west coast of Sumatra; area 4,010 sq km/1,548 sq mi; population (1990) 21,700. Nias is mountainous, and the economy is based on shifting cultivation and hunting, fishing, and gathering. The main products are rice, sago, nutmeg, and coconuts. The largest town is Gunung Sitoli in the northeast. The island is a national park.

There are several megalithic sites on the island, with standing stones and stone carvings.
