Nicaea

Ruined city (modern Iznik) in Turkey, capital of the ancient kingdom of Bithynia. It was the site of the Council of Nicaea in 325 and of another ecumenical council in 787. Between 1205 and 1261 it was the seat of the Byzantine emperors, and in 1330 it was conquered by Turkish forces.
