Nicephorus, St

Nicephorus, St (c. 758–829)

Patriarch of Constantinople from 806. He defended the use and veneration of images against the iconoclasts, and was banished to a monastery in Asia in 816.

As well as his writings on the image controversy, he wrote Chronographia Brevis and Breviarium Historicum, a Byzantine history from 602 to 770.
