Nichiren (1222-1282)

Japanese Buddhist monk, founder of the sect that bears his name. The sect bases its beliefs on the Lotus Sūtra, which Nichiren held to be the only true revelation of the teachings of Buddha, and on repetition of the sūtra's title to attain enlightenment.
