Nicholas, St (lived 4th century)In the Christian church, patron saint of Russia, children, merchants, sailors, and pawnbrokers; bishop of Myra (now in Turkey). His legendary gifts of dowries to poor girls led to the custom of giving gifts to children on the eve of his feast day, 6 December, still retained in some countries, such as the Netherlands; elsewhere the custom has been transferred to Christmas Day.
