Nicholas of Hereford

    0.13 sec.

Nicholas of Hereford (lived 1390)

English Lollard preacher and writer. A close friend and supporter of the religious reformer John Wycliffe, he was excommunicated in 1382 for his support of the Lollard doctrines. He aided Wycliffe in his translation of the Bible.

An appeal to the Pope against his excommunication led to his imprisonment in Rome. He escaped, but was captured in England. In 1391 he recanted, and after holding several offices under the crown retired to a Carthusian monastery.
