Nickerie

District in western Suriname, bordered to the west by Guyana, to the north by the Atlantic, and to the south by Brazil and the Sierra de Tumucumaque; area 64,610 sq km/24,946 sq mi; population (1996) 32,690. The capital city and port for the district is Nieuw Nickerie, a port on the bank of the Nickerie River, located 5 km/3 mi from the river's mouth. The area is noted for its ricefields. Rice is the main commodity produced in the area. Bananas are also grown for export.
