Nicklaus, Jack William (1940- )

US golfer, nicknamed ‘the Golden Bear’ and widely regarded as the game's greatest ever player. He won a record 18 major titles between 1962 and 1986, and finished second on a record 19 occasions. In 1999, the US magazine Sports Illustrated named him ‘Best Individual Male Athlete of the 20th Century’. He played his last major championship in 2005.

Nicklaus played for the US Ryder Cup team six times 1969-81 and was non-playing captain in 1983 and 1987 when the event was played over the course he designed at Muirfield Village, Ohio. He has designed more than 200 other courses around the world.
