Nicodé, Jean Louis (1853–1919)

German-Polish conductor and composer. He is known for his symphonic poems and song cycles.

In 1856 his family moved to Berlin, where Nicodé studied, first under his father and from 1869 at the Neue Akademie der Tonkunst. Afterwards he taught there and arranged concerts at which he appeared as pianist, toured in the Balkans with Désirée Artot, and, in 1878, became professor at the Dresden Conservatory. From 1885 he devoted himself to conducting and composition.

Orchestral and choral

symphonic ode Das Meer for solo voices, male chorus, orchestra, and organ (1889); symphonic poems Maria Stuart (after Schiller, 1880), Die Jagd nach dem Glück, Gloria; symphonic variations for orchestra; romance for violin and orchestra; cello and piano sonata; sonata and numerous pieces for piano; songs, including the cycle Dem Andenken an Amarantha (1886); male-voice choruses.
