Nicol, Peter (1973– )| Scottish squash player who in 1999 became Britain's first-ever men's World Open champion. In 1998 he became the first British player to top the men's world rankings, and the first since Jonah Barrington in 1973 to win the British Open. Also in 1998, he won the inaugural Commonwealth Games men's squash gold medal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was ranked as the world's number one player for 24 consecutive months in 2002–03. |

| Born at Inverurie, near Aberdeen, Scotland, he made his debut in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour in January 1992. Despite declaring himself to be intensely patriotic to his native Scotland, he switched his allegiance to England in March 2001 in order to qualify for a funding grant. |
