Nicolescu, Marianna (1948– )

Romanian soprano. She studied in Rome, and with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. She sang Violetta at Florence in 1976, and Gilda and Nedda in 1978, at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Her Milan debut was made at La Scala in Berio's operas La vera storia (1982), and Un re in ascolto, in which she played Donna Elvira. She has also performed in Rossi's Orfeo and Jommelli's Fetonte. She appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1990 as Mozart's Elettra. Her Donizetti roles include Maria di Rohan and Elizabeth I (Monte Carlo, 1992).
