Niel, Adolphe (1802-1869)

French marshal and minister of war in 1867. He distinguished himself at the capture of Constantine, Algeria, in 1837. During the Crimean War, he took the Malakoff redoubt near Sevastopol in 1855. He was made a marshal by Napoleon III after the French victory over the Austrians at the Battle of Solferino in 1859.
