Niemeyer, (Soares Filho) Oscar (1907- )

Brazilian architect. He was joint designer of the United Nations headquarters in New York in 1947 and from 1957 architect of many public buildings in the Brazilian capital, Brasília. His idiosyncratic interpretation of the modernist idiom uses symbolic form to express the function of a building; for example, the Catholic cathedral in Brasília.
