Nieuwpoort

Port in the Belgian province of West Flanders, 34 km/21 mi west of Bruges; population (1991) 9,600. It stands on the River Yser (Ijzer), about 3 km/2 mi above its mouth, and at the junction of several canals.

Nieuwpoort was on the front line of fighting throughout World War I; as a result, the city was completely destroyed. Rebuilt, it suffered badly again in World War II.
