Nièvre

River in central France, rising near Varzy and flowing 40 km/25 mi south to join the River Loire at Nevers; it gives its name to the département of Nièvre.

Nièvre

Département in the Burgundy region of central France; area 6,836 sq km/2,639 sq mi; population (1999 est) 225,200. It contains the basins of the rivers Loire and Seine. Forests cover large areas of Nièvre; farmland is largely devoted to rearing cattle, sheep, and horses. The chief crops are oats, wheat, and potatoes. Vines are grown in the Loire valley and in the neighbourhood of Clamecy; the white wines of Pouilly (notably, Pouilly Fumé) are famous. Coal is mined around Decize, and the chief manufactures are iron and steel, at Guérigny, Fourchambault, and Imphy. The principal towns are Nevers (the administrative centre), Château-Chinon, Clamecy, and Cosne.

The landscape of the eastern part of Nièvre is made up of the rugged granite mountains of the Morvan, of which the highest point within the département is Preneley (850 m/2,789 ft).

Nièvre was created from the old province of Nivernais, together with part of Orléanais.
