Night at the Chinese Opera, A

Opera in three acts by Judith Weir (libretto by composer, based in part on Chi-Chun-Hsiang's The Chao Family Orphan). It was produced in Cheltenham at the Everyman Theatre on 8 July 1987. In the story, Chao Liu is in exile after the invasion by Kublai Khan, but after an earthquake interrupts a play which runs parallel to the course of his life, he is arrested. Although the play ends happily, Chao is executed.
