nightshade
Any of several plants in the nightshade family. They include the annual herbaceous black nightshade (S. nigrum), with white flowers similar to those of the potato plant and black berries; the perennial shrubby bittersweet or woody nightshade (S. dulcamara), with purple, potatolike flowers and scarlet berries; and, belonging to a different genus, deadly nightshade or belladonna (A. belladonna). (Genera Solanum and Atropa, family Solanaceae.)
