nightshadeAny of several plants in the nightshade family. They include the annual herbaceous black nightshade (S. nigrum), with white flowers similar to those of the potato plant and black berries; the perennial shrubby bittersweet or woody nightshade (S. dulcamara), with purple, potatolike flowers and scarlet berries; and, belonging to a different genus, deadly nightshade or belladonna (A. belladonna).
