Niigata

Industrial port and seat of the prefectural government, on the Sea of Japan, in Chubu region, Honshu island, Japan, 255 km/158 mi northwest of Tokyo; population (2005) 813,800. It is the largest city on the Sea of Japan coast, and the port, open to international trade since 1859, is the largest in the region. Industries include oil refining, chemicals, and the manufacture of textiles and machinery.

Niigata is the home of Niigata University (1949).

In 1964 an earthquake damaged over 6,000 buildings in Niigata and caused a serious fire in the oil refinery.
