Niihama

City and port in Ehime prefecture, Japan, in northern Shikoku, facing the Seto Naikai (Inland Sea); population (1995 est) 127,900. It developed around the copper-refining industry and the export of copper ores, mined locally until 1973. The city has become a centre of the chemical, petrochemical, and heavy industries, with an industrial complex developed by Sumitomo Corporation. Other industries include aluminium smelting and machinery manufacture.
