Nikisch, Arthur

Nikisch, Arthur (1855–1922)

Austro-Hungarian conductor. He conducted the first performance of Bruckner's seventh symphony in 1884, and in 1913 conducted Wagner's Ring at Covent Garden, London.

He studied in Vienna and played violin in the court orchestra 1874–77. He was conductor at the Leipzig Opera 1878–89. Subsequent posts included the Boston Symphony Orchestra 1889–93, Budapest Opera 1893–95, Leipzig Gewandhaus from 1895, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
