Nin-Culmell, Joaquin Maria

Nin-Culmell, Joaquin Maria (1908–2004)

US composer and pianist of Cuban descent. He studied in Paris with Dukas and Falla. He was active as a concert pianist between 1930 and 1950, and as a conductor from 1940. Resident in the USA from 1938, he taught at Berkeley from 1950 until 1974.

Works

opera Celestina (1965–80); ballet El Burlador de Sevilla and La Rêve de Cyrano; incidental music for Shakespeare's Cymbeline; Mass (1970); cello concertos for cello and piano, 48 Tonadas for piano.
