Niort

Capital of the French département of Deux-Sèvres, on the River Sèvre-Niortaise, 125 km/78 mi southeast of Nantes; population (1999) 56,700. The main industries are the manufacture of footwear, gloves, and brushes; angelica is processed. Two towers of the 12th–13th-century fortress are preserved.

Madame de Maintenon, wife of Louis XIV, was born here.
