Nipigon, Lake

Lake in southwest Ontario, Canada; area 4,848 sq km/1,872 sq mi. It has 1,300 km/808 mi of shoreline and lies 55 km/34 mi north of Lake Superior in a forest reserve of over 18,130 sq km/7,000 sq mi. It is 112 km/70 mi long and 80 km/50 mi wide, is very deep and contains over 1,000 islands. The Nipigon River flows out of the lake and flows into Lake Superior. It supplies hydroelectric power to the region. The lake is known for its scenery and its wild surroundings.
