Nippur

Ancient city of Sumer and Babylonia, about 161 km/100 mi southeast of Baghdad. As the principal centre of the worship of Enlil, the chief Sumerian god, it had religious and political importance.

Nippur was continuously occupied from Neolithic to Parthian times. In the 3rd millennium BC, the rulers of the various Sumerian city-states derived their authority from recognition by Enlil of Nippur. Excavations at the site have revealed many Sumerian literary texts.
