Niš

Town in Serbia, on the River Nisava; population (2001 est) 184,400. It is an important road and rail junction and has chemical and agricultural foodstuff industries.

It was the birthplace and the summer residence of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. The town was destroyed by the Huns in the 5th century and was rebuilt by Justinian I. In 1914-15 it was the seat of the Serbian government. A university was founded here in 1965.
