Nisibis

Ancient city about 210 km/130 mi northwest of Mosul (northern Iraq) and capital of the Assyrian district of Nisibina. As a frontier fortress and centre of trade, it was pivotal in the various wars between Rome and the Parthians after it was captured by the Roman soldier Lucullus 68 BC.

Seleucus I settled Macedonians there, and renamed it Antioch (of Mygdaonia), but it soon reverted to its old name. Septimus Severus raised Nisibis to the status of a colonia. It was taken by the Sassanid Persians AD 363, and by the Arabs AD 640, after which it long continued to flourish as a trading centre. But with the decline of the Alleppo–Mosul caravan route, modern Nusyabin is a small and mainly Armenian-populated town.
