Neyshabur

City in Khorasan province, northeastern Iran, 65 km/40 mi southwest of Mashhad; population (2006) 208,900. Neyshabur is the centre of a fertile area. Products include leather and carpets. The city has long been a major centre for trade in turquoise.

In medieval times Neyshabur was an important cultural centre under the Seljuk Turks. The poet Omar Khayyam was born and buried here.
