Nishinomiya

Nishinomiya

City in Hyogo prefecture, Japan; population (1998 est) 405,200. It is a residential satellite of Osaka and Kobe and an important city of the Hanshin Industrial Zone. Industries include sake-making, dating from the 17th century, and steel and food processing.

Nishinomiya is home to Kwasei Gakuin University (1889) and Kobe Women's College. It is also the site of the Hirota Shrine. Koshien stadium (1924), was Japan's first modern baseball venue and is the site of the nationally important annual High School Baseball championships.
