Nishinomiya

Nishinomiya

City in Hyogo prefecture, Japan; population (1998 est) 405,200. It is a residential satellite of Osaka and Kobe and an important city of the Hanshin Industrial Zone. Industries include sake-making, dating from the 17th century, and steel and food processing.

Nishinomiya is home to Kwasei Gakuin University (1889) and Kobe Women's College. It is also the site of the Hirota Shrine. Koshien stadium (1924), was Japan's first modern baseball venue and is the site of the nationally important annual High School Baseball championships.

In one attack, a reporter was killed and another was injured when a masked man sprayed shotgun fire at a local Asahi bureau in Nishinomiya near Osaka.
He embarked on the three-month voyage from his hometown of Nishinomiya near Kobe despite breaking Japanese law, which did not allow its citizens to sail on their own out of the country, and without a passport or money.
