Nissen, Hans Hermann

Nissen, Hans Hermann (1893–1980)

German bass-baritone. He made his debut at Berlin in 1924, as the Caliph in Der Barbier von Bagdad. He performed at Munich between 1925 and 1967, appearing as Almaviva, Renato, Barak, and Iago. In 1928 he sang Sachs at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London; he returned in 1934 to play Wotan, a role he resumed for his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1938. He sang Sachs under Toscanini at Salzburg in 1936, and recorded Act III of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under Böhm the following year.
