Nivernais

Former province of central France, nearly corresponding to the present département of Nièvre. It was formerly a duchy, with Nevers as its capital. Louis XIV joined it to the crown in 1669. The canal of Nivernais, constructed between 1784 and 1842, connects the Loire and Yonne rivers.

The French chief minister Cardinal Mazarin bought the duchy in 1659, and it remained within his family when it was incorporated into the royal domain in 1669.

Byline: Ed Quigley LOULOU NIVERNAIS loves the mud and, with conditions at Exeter turning into something resembling a swamp, the nine-year-old could run well in the Weatherbys Bank Handicap Hurdle (2.
Of course, he could be vulnerable to improving types and there is nothing more progressive in the line-up than Loulou Nivernais who has gone up a stone for his canter at Newcastle and is 40lb higher than when he started his four-timer at Wetherby in January.
Meanwhile, Loulou Nivernais has shot up the ratings after winning his last four starts, but he can defy a further rise of 16lb in the Betfair Handicap Chase at Wetherby.
