Nizhnevartovsk

City in Tyumen region, in the Russian Federation, in northern Siberia; population (2002) 239,000. The oilfield discovered in 1965 at nearby Lake Samotlor is one of the largest in the world, and there are natural gas fields to the north. Poor technology prevented their efficient exploitation until the 1990s.
