Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Nogi, Maresuke (1849–1912)

Japanese soldier. He commanded the Third Army in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05. He forced Port Arthur to surrender, and his army's flank march resulted in the decisive Japanese victory in the Battle of Mukden (now Shenyang). Together with his wife he committed ‘honourable suicide’ (hara-kiri) on the death of the emperor Meiji.

His death was widely regarded as a protest against the growth of materialism and selfish individualism in Japan.
