Nolichucky

River flowing through North Carolina and Tennessee, USA; length 240 km/150 mi. It is formed in North Carolina by the junction of the North Toe and Cane rivers, flows through the Appalachian Mountains, and joins the French Broad River at the northeastern end of Douglas Lake.

It was used as one of the earliest settlement routes into Tennessee. The birthplace of the US folk hero Davy Crockett is on the river southwest of Limestone.

Course

The river is formed in the Blue Ridge of the Appalachian Mountains, in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest, and flows northwest into Tennessee through the Bald Mountains. After passing Erwin it winds west and southwest. The Nolichucky Dam, southwest of Greeneville, forms Davy Crockett Lake. The Nolichucky then continues west and northwest to join the French Broad.
