Nolte, Nick (1941- )

US actor. He has played a wide variety of characters in over 40 films. Awards include the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for Affliction (1998), Who'll Stop the Rain? (1978), and North Dallas Forty (1979); and a Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic Actor for The Prince of Tides (1991). Other films include New York Stories (1989), Cape Fear (1991), Lorenzo's Oil (1993), U-Turn (1997), and The Thin Red Line (1998).

Nolte was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and went to Arizona State University on a football scholarship, but dropped out and subsequently studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse and Stella Adler's Academy in Los Angeles. He travelled around the USA with various theatre companies until 1976, when he appeared in the television miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man. Film appearances, beginning with The Deep (1977), followed.
