intron

In genetics, a sequence of bases in DNA that carries no genetic information. Introns, discovered in 1977, make up approximately 98% of DNA (the rest is made up of exons). Introns may be present within genes but are removed during translation. Their function is unknown.

about 10% of the human genome is made up of one base sequence, Alu, that occurs in about 1 million separate locations. It is made up of 283 nucleotides, has no determinable function (though some do have an effect on nearby genes), and is a transposon (‘jumping gene’).
