The ecosystem of the prickly pear attracts bugs -- cochineal insects, gathered for the carmine dye they produce, thrive on the nopalea cochinillefer; black widows, walking sticks, bees, swallowtail butterflies and leaf-footed bugs gather their food or make their homes among the spines.
