Nord-Pas-de-Calais

Region of northern France, bounded by the English Channel to the northwest; area 12,414 sq km/4,793 sq mi; population (1999 est) 3,996,600. Its administrative centre is Lille, and it consists of the départements of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. The land is predominantly flat and well-drained, with northern sections below sea level. The coasts are dotted with high chalk cliffs.

Pas-de-Calais is the French term for the Straits of Dover, between the English Channel and the North Sea. Nord-Pas-de-Calais contains the urban complex of Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing, which benefits greatly from the road connection to the French terminus of the Channel Tunnel.
