Norfolk County

Administrative district of eastern Massachusetts; area 1,036 sq km/400 sq mi, population (1997 est) 639,200. Its seat is at Dedham. The county is located to the south and west of Boston, and extends to the border with Rhode Island.

The county is densely populated in its northeastern part, which includes the industrial city of Quincy and the affluent suburbs of Brookline and Milton. Though it lies within Norfolk County, Brookline is enclosed by Middlesex and Suffolk counties. To the southwest, the county becomes increasingly rural, although post-1960s development along Route 495, Boston's outer ring road, has brought a more suburban mode of life to this area.
