Noricum

Ancient district south of the River Danube, between Raetia and Pannonia. Its mainly Celtic inhabitants were ruled by local princes. In 16 BC they joined a Pannonian invasion of Istria, also south of the Danube, and were defeated by Publius Silius, governor of Illyricum. From this date Noricum came under Roman rule, governed by an imperial legate.
