Norma

Small constellation of the southern hemisphere. Its name means ‘carpenter's square’. It was formerly known as ‘Norma et Regula’, ‘the Level and Square’.

It was named by 18th-century French scientist and astronomer Nicolas Lacaille at the same time as the adjacent Circinus, represented as a pair of compasses.

Norma

Opera by Vincenzo Bellini (libretto by Felice Romani, based on L A Soumet's tragedy), produced in Milan at La Scala on 26 December 1831. In the story, the Druid priestess Norma still loves the Roman consul Pollione after he abandons her for another priestess, Adalgisa. However, jealousy and rivalry result in the deaths of both Norma and Pollione.
