Norman, (Fredrik Vilhelm) Ludvig (1831–1885)

Swedish pianist, conductor, and composer. He published a book of songs at the age of 11 and was left a poor orphan, but was enabled by patrons (including Jenny Lind) to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. In 1851 his first piano work was published at Schumann's instigation. Returning to Stockholm in 1861, he was conductor of the royal opera until 1879, and conducted symphonic concerts until his death. In 1864 he married the violinist Wilma Neruda.

incidental music to Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra; three symphonies (1858, 1874, 1885), four overtures; chamber music, including six string quartets; instrumental sonatas; piano works; songs.
