Normanton

Town in West Yorkshire, England, situated on the River Calder; population (2001) 14,100. Normanton developed in the mid-19th century as an important railway centre, although this function has now declined. Coal mining in the area declined in the 1980s.

There is a Norman church and a 16th-century grammar school. Traces of a Roman encampment are located nearby.
