Norristown

Borough and seat of Montgomery County, in southeastern Pennsylvania; population (1990) 30,700. It is situated on the north bank of the Schuylkill River, 27 km/17 mi northwest of Philadelphia.

Norristown stands on a site purchased by Isaac Norris and William Trent from the Penn family in 1704. Its development as an industrial centre was promoted by the canalization of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers and by the early completion of a railway link to Philadelphia, in 1834. Nowadays, it is a residential suburb, but also produces clothing, chemicals, machinery, rubber, steel tubing, and plastics.
